Grammar
Demonstratives: Dit, Dat, Deze, Die
Dutch has four demonstratives. For nearby things: 'dit' (this, with het-words) and 'deze' (this, with de-words). For distant things: 'dat' (that, with het-words) and 'die' (that, with de-words). At A0 level, just start using them — 'dit' and 'dat' are the most useful for pointing at things.
Dit is goed.
This is good.
'Dit' = this (het-word or general use). Great for pointing at things nearby.
Dat is duur!
That is expensive!
'Dat' = that (het-word or general use). Use when something is further away.
Deze koffie is lekker.
This coffee is tasty.
'Deze' = this (de-word). 'Koffie' is a de-word, so use 'deze'.
Die man spreekt Engels.
That man speaks English.
'Die' = that (de-word). 'Man' is a de-word, so use 'die'.
